Eulogy Benjamin Kiplagat

Monday 1st January 2024 PRESS RELEASE – CONDOLENCE MESSAGE: BENJAMIN KIPLAGAT It is with profound sadness and grief that we learnt of the passing on of our long time elite athlete, Benjamin Kiplagat, which took place in the morning of Sunday 31st December 2023. According to reliable sources, the body of the late with deep knife wounds on his neck was found in his brother’s car in Texas near Kimumu Secondary School along Eldoret - Iten Road in Kenya. Benjamin was largely based in Eldoret and Iten together with his peers like Boniface Kiprop, Chepkirwok Abraham and others. The late had his secondary school education in Rubongi Secondary school in Tororo and later at Standard High School, Zana after being spotted by the then late Treasurer of Uganda Athletics Federation, Mr. Godfrey Nuwagaba (rip). He found his peak in middle and long distance running with Standard Athletics Club and Global Sport Management, which were being managed locally by Mr. Nuwagaba. He has his country home in Kapkoros, Bukwo before relocating to Iten in Kenya, mainly for training purposes, where he has some family ties as well. Born on 4th March 1989, Benjamin has been a loyal Ugandan middle and long distance athlete right from the time he was a junior athlete. In 2008 at the age of 19 he discovered his passion in the steeplechase going on to set Uganda’s U20 National Record of 8:14.29 in Hengelo in a race where he was second. Two years later. 2010, he rewrote the senior Steeplechase record at 8:03.81 in Lausanne, Switzerland’ in a race where he was also second. In his career, Kiplagat has represented Uganda in: 1. Three Olympic cycles; 2016 in Rio de Janeiro Brazil, 2012 in London Great Britain, and 2008 in Beijing China. 2. Six World Championships in Athletics, 2019 in Doha, Qatar, 2015 Beijing China, 2013 Moscow, Russia, 2011 Daegu, Korea, 2009 Berlin, Germany and 2007 at the tender age of 18 in Osaka, Japan. 3. Three World Cross Country Championships; 2008 in Edinburg Great Britain (U20), 2007 in Mombasa, Kenya (U20) and 2006 in Fukuoka Japan (Short Race). 4. Two World Junior Championships; Bydgoszcz 2008 and Beijing 2006 5. Three Africa Senior Championships; 2012 Porto Novo, Benin, 2010 Nairobi, Kenya and 2007 Algiers Algeria. The late Benjamin in his career won three medals for Uganda: Silver at World Junior Championships (Bydgoszcz, 2008, Bronze at Africa Senior Championships (Porto Novo 2012) and Team Bronze at World Cross Country Championships. (2008 Edinburg). Other major competitions in which the late has featured for Uganda include: Commonwealth Games in 2010 in New Delhi India, Continental Cup in Athletics in 2010 Split Croatia, Athletics Finals 2008 in Stuttgart Germany, World University in 2011, Shenzhen, China Games and several invitational events. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult moment as they come to terms and mourn the death of their beloved one.
