US-based Ayikoru hits Africa mark

The Ugandan women track events has registered one more qualifier for the Africa Senior Championships as the 7th National Track and Field Trials head to Mandela National Stadium, Namboole this weekend (May 8, 2021). The US-based student from Georgia Southern University, Scovia Ayikoru makes the latest entry for continental championships having twice in the season posted the 400m qualification standard. Ayikoru had earlier in the season hit the first 54.54 Africa mark about three weeks ago and confirmed her intentions with an improved 53.74 posted during the weekend North Florida Invitational, USA. Her performance capitulated her to 9th position on the Invite outdoor rankings. Her entry now marks the second woman after Shida Leni to qualify for the one-lap (400m) race and the 14th on the 2021 women season list for the continental senior championships slated for June 1-5, 2021 in Algiers, Algeria. Meanwhile only four men have this season 2021 hit the Africa qualification standards namely; Orogot Tarsis (Soroti) 200m, Okot Benson (UCU) 200m, Joshua Cheptegei (Police) 1500m and Ronald Musagala (Police) 1500m as May 15, 2021 qualification deadline inches closer. The weekend 7th National Trial is however likely to see a number of improved marks and more qualifiers scattered across the athletics track and field divide as the qualification deadline creeps in.
